iTunes 7

Big update to iTunes, but it’s some pretty ugly stuff. What are the scrollbars doing? They don’t fit in to Windows or OS X themes at all. The highlighted option in the source panel is also pretty ugly. However, the improved video playback, the new device manager (also pretty unattractive) and, most importantly gapless playback make this worthwhile.
The new icon is also uglier.

new theme

I took this photo on the Japan trip this summer while we were driving around Kyoto in a tour bus. It’s pretty difficult to take a good shot on a Japanese highway – there are fences everywhere.
It seems that I make new themes about as often as I post here nowadays… Maybe I should make a directory for my K2 styles.

School has been going well. I wrote some automation for Uni’s alumni reunions gallery: a PHP template for generating gallery pages, and an Automator script to create thumbnails. This should mean that I’ll be done with the project pretty quickly, and maybe I can get on to some more interesting stuff. :P

update

Osashiburi da na… Anyway, I updated the blog to WordPress 2.0.4 and the theme to K2 0.9. The theme upgrade is quite nice, although that slider doesn’t seem to be working in Safari – I’ll have to take a look at it later.

There’s also a new feature in the sidebar – Latest Links. It’s based off of my del.icio.us account. You can mouseover for a description. I plan to post new links often-ish, unlike posts here.

electronic goods

My noise-canceling headphones are broken :( The wire that runs through the top part of the headset between the ears is probably frayed… I might open it up, now that I got a replacement pair from Office Depot (on sale for $40).

I also got the Robot Chicken Season 1 DVD. Not as many deleted scenes as I had hoped for, but it is still totally awesome. I’ll probably have to buy season 2 too after tonight’s episode. (“Hey, those shoes look nice. But they’d look even better in my pants! No? Well, are you from Heaven? Because I have an erection!”)

So my big purchase of late is, of course, my new Nintendo DS Lite. I went out to Target this morning at 8:30 to buy it. Got the box, everything went fine. I came home, and started playing New Super Mario Brothers. I didn’t get too far because of lunch. I then went to test out its GBA abilities by playing my new (used) copy of Advance Wars 2. Then I realized a serious flaw in the DS — the left part of the D-pad didn’t work. I didn’t notice in my minute or so of NSMB because you pretty much just go right and up in Mario.
Anyway, I took it back to Target and got a new one, and it works fine. Kirby: Cursed Canvas is such a cool game. And Advance Wars plays just fine.

ms

No, not Microsoft, MemoryStick. As in, were you aware that MemoryStick and MemoryStick Pro are (outwardly) physically identical while being incompatible? I knew about the differences between MemoryStick and MemoryStick Duo and MemoryStick Micro, and I knew that Pro offered a quicker data transfer rate, but I figured that it would degrade gracefully, like USB 2.0 devices fall back to USB 1.1. Of course, it doesn’t. So now I am stuck with a 512 MB MemoryStick Pro with no camera to go with it. :( I think my mom has decided to buy me a new Sony camera now though, so this cloud has a pretty decent consumerist silver lining. The old Sony camera is 3-4 years old anyway.
This sure is a good example of why Sony fails at formats though. Seriously: BetaMax, MiniDisc, MemoryStick, UMD — none of these have really caught on. Makes you wonder about the future of Blu-Ray, and consequently the ($600!!!) PS3. I sure won’t be buying one of those, at least not until/unless Blu-Ray establishes itself as the dominant next-gen optical media, with a price tag like that. I still love Sony’s products on the whole, but their (semi-)proprietary formats sure haven’t been profitable.

google analytics

I got a Google Analytics invitation yesterday. So now it’s operating on all 3 of my current websites. It has also revealed that seriously nobody reads this blog. Of course, it’s no longer linked to on the front page, so that’s okay. It wouldn’t hurt the business section of the site to get some hits though. The tools it offers are pretty awesome, especially compared to any other free site statistics offerings I’ve seen. Analytics provides a map of visiotrs a la Frappr, although not in quite as nice a fashion. I only have one day of data to work with, but I imagine that this will be very helpful in the future for improving and creating new websites.

  • Tommy G’s Site running off of MySQL database, with help from Marquis.
  • Design site running. Still doesn’t render quite right in IE.
  • Blog post!

And I did my homework too.

busy busy

Well somehow the like 5 lines of CSS I changed in this blog template killed it in IE, but you’ll just have to deal with it for now if you’re unfortunate enough to be using that browser. I finished up all the hard work on the Wampler Property Management site tonight. (It’s not there yet pending final approval.) I kinda forgot to validate my work while i was working, so I had a few small changes to make on ALL the pages. Pretty dumb of me, but I wanted the site to validate. My design portfolio site should go up this weekend too.

Went to see V for Vendetta with Marquis & Luke; it was pretty good, if a little but unnerving. I maintain that the 1812 Overture is way overused for blowing stuff up. I don’t know that its even that great a choice for that sort of thing, other than the fact that it has a freaking cannon part.

Oh crap, I still need to do that history paper. :(

hub!

I had to buy a USB hub today just to support all my peripherals. Of course, the iMac only has 3 USB ports, one of which is used for the mouse, so it’s not that bad.
I also made the blog theme a bit uglier, if somewhat more seasonal. Spring break is pretty boring.
